Welcome to SC History Newsletter #106!
I cannot contain my excitement because today I am debuting our first ever SC History Newsletter Podcast episode!!!!
It has been a dream of mine for many years to start a podcast on a topic I care about, but I’ve always been intimidated by the technology.
Well, after an inspiring pep talk from my sister
(a fellow subscriber!) this summer, I decided to put on my “big girl pants” and make this happen.The podcast episode is the sole focus of today’s newsletter and you will see it linked below!
My goal is to make the podcast an integral element of the SC History Newsletter. I will interview South Carolina history experts, authors, curators, and more and can’t wait to share more of these conversations with you in the coming weeks and months. Note that the podcast is currently only available through Substack, but I am working on getting it uploaded to Apple, Spotify, and other podcast platforms as well. :)

"A Gamecock Odyssey": University of South Carolina (USC) Sports History Interview w/ author Alan Piercy
As we get excited for football season ahead, join me as I interview author
about the history of University of South Carolina (USC) Sports through his new book “A Gamecock Odyssey.” I am very grateful to Alan, as he was one of the earliest supporters of the SC History Newsletter — and I was so excited to finally meet him (albeit digitally)!In our interview, we discussed the many fascinating elements & eras of USC Sports — from the early days, to the modernization of the university’s sports complexes, to why USC left the ACC and how it got to the SEC conference, iconic mascots and coaches, scandals, the history of fan traditions, and so much more.
NOTE: Our conversation was originally scheduled for 1 hour, but we spoke for nearly 2 hours! I am someone who listens to podcasts on my commutes to/from work and I’m hoping this podcast can accompany you on your journey to work as well (or however you enjoy digesting your podcasts)— and you can break up your listening time as you see fit. :)
